Inertial sensors detect motion; be that as multiple degrees of freedom, acceleration, tilt, shock, vibration or rotation. One of the most effective inertial devices is a rate gyroscope, which indicates the rate of change of angle with time. Rate gyros can be used with other sensors to make an inertial navigation system that calculates the position, orientation and velocity of a moving object without needing external references.
In automotive and aerospace applications, rate gyros are used in attitude control systems for determining the orientation of a vehicle. Industrial, medical, instrumentation, virtual reality and consumer applications also make use of inertial sensors. For example, they can be used to control robotics systems on a manufacturing line, or artificial limbs in a medical scenario.
Melexis’ angular rate sensor consists of a MEMS gyroscope that uses the Coriolis effect and mixed signal conditioning circuitry to provide the angular rate information. Melexis’ contactless design and clever signal conditioning, which results in very low power consumption, particularly suits our angular rate sensors to hostile operating environments in automotive applications.
